2024 Georgia Cities Week Celebrations

In celebration of Georgia Cities Week, the City of Doraville partnered with Cross Keys High School to put on a Mock City Council Meeting. Students from Cross Keys filled the roles of Mayor, City Council Members, City staff, and residents. All to give students a close-up look at the significant role their local government plays in their daily lives.

This is Doraville's second year partnering with Cross Keys to bring high school students a better understanding of local government. City staff met with the students to teach them Robert's Rules of Order, go over the structure of City government and each of the departments within the City, and help them with research and preparation. Students also attended a City Council meeting to see the things they had been learning in action.

Finally, on April 25th students arrived at City Hall to assume their roles and take their seats in their Mock City Council Event. This year the students took on three real-life issues. The students, acting in their respective roles, tackled a rezoning case that proposed developing a vacant lot in a neighborhood into new apartments, raising pool fees in a way that covered expenses but remained affordable for residents, and plans for a tree donation from a local nursery.

The students performed excellently and the City is looking forward to partnering with Cross Keys again next year to keep the tradition going!
